WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE GREEN NEW DEAL STUDENT FILM COMPETITION !

Open to all students enrolled in a Hawaii Island high school.

This year’s contest includes two divisions: 
Division 1: Grades 11-12 

Division 2: Grades 9-10

All films must focus on aspects of the Green New Deal.

All entrants must be working with at least one DOE or private-school teacher in an advisory capacity.

Films may be either a Mini Documentary or a Short (see descriptions below).

  • Mini Documentary: In-depth program of an event, issue, place, individual or group. (10 minute maximum)

  • Short: A creative look at an issue using comedy, drama, music or a cultural setting. (5 minute maximum)

First place for each division: $1,000 cash prize 

Second place for each division: $500 cash prize

Third place for each division: solar/crank radio


Examples of themes (just suggestions):

-How could you apply the Green New Deal to Hawaii Island?

-How to educate your parents about the Green New Deal (could be a comedy!)

-What is the Green New Deal?

-How do good jobs co-exist with a livable planet?

-What similarities exist between FDR’s New Deal and the Green New Deal? What differences?

-How would the Green New Deal help our island? How would it help the planet?


All entries will be screened and prizes will be awarded at a public ceremony on May 31, 2019 at the Honokaa People's Theater.


All entries must be in .mov or .mp4 format, and must be submitted with registration form.
